Celebrating our Presbyterian Roots
A ceilidh (kay-lee) is a Scottish dance party and that is what we are going to have on October 29th, Reformation Sunday. We will gather in the pavilion at 5 p.m. with other Presbyterians and guests to remember and celebrate our Scots-Irish heritage and our Celtic roots. There will shortbread and other Scottish treats, a Celtic Musician who will share traditional Scots-Irish songs, a brief reflection on the Celtic Christian tradition, instruction in dances with Scottish roots and, if we are lucky, an authentic bag piper. Come join Presbyterians from surrounding churches and guests for what we hope will be the first of many similar events. Come to the first Pender Ceilidh featuring Good food, friends, fun and fellowship. Join us and bring a friend.
Outdoor Nativity play: Streets of Bethlehem
We will be joining with other area churches in presenting the “Streets of Bethlehem”, a creative retelling of the birth of Jesus. The event itself will be presented on the evenings of December 1st and 2nd, but there is much to do before then. We need actors, costumers, set builders and refreshment preparers to get the production off the ground. The “Streets of Bethlehem” is a walk from Herod’ palace through the “landscapes” of Bethlehem and the streets of the town to end up at the Inn and the stable where Jesus is born. It will begin on the west side of the courthouse around New Covenant Church and end up with the nativity on the east side of the courthouse and refreshments at the John Rivenbark Pavilion at our church. People will proceed through the sets in groups led by actors and along the way they will hear about the birth of Jesus. If you are interested in a part or want to help in some way, contact the church office, rehearsals begin later this month so let us know right away.
Childcare News
Hello again! We hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful fall weather, I know we sure are! The children love playing outside in these wonderful temperatures.
Our three and four year old preschool’s theme this month has been about apples. We have done lots of things with apples. We made apple trees with thumb prints, apple puppets, found a star in the apple, apple prints and even sampled some delicious apple pie. We learned about Johnny Appleseed and played lot of games like “worm in an apple”. Our bible stories have been on the story of Joseph and how we should care for our siblings, The Miraculous Catch and how to be fishers of men. The story of Zacchaeus was one of our favorites as well as the story of Jonah and the big fish. The children have learned a lot from these stories and we feel that it builds great character in them.
The afterschool children, all 14 of them, have also enjoyed being outside playing kickball, jump rope or going to Harrell’s Park. We took a field trip to Cripple Creek to see Jason and Bruce’s Lego collection and boy what a collection it was! Thank you Jason and Bruce for the tour! We even went out to eat one day at Andy’s, of course that was a big hit! The afterschoolers have also been having fun cooking. We have made peanut brittle and caramel apples just to name a few.
Please continue to pray for us as we strive to do God’s work in this Center.
These things I have spoken to you,
That my joy may remain in you,
And that your joy may be full.
