Greetings from our Pastor

As pastor of Burgaw Presbyterian Church I want to welcome you and tell you a little bit about our ministry. We are a community of faith committed to God’s Word as it is found in the scriptures of the Old and New Testament and committed to the service of Jesus Christ in the greater community around us. God’s Word is the source and guide of our life together. We worship and pray, study and learn, share fellowship and serve others with the gifts God has given us.  At heart, Burgaw Presbyterian Church is people, ordinary people who come from every walk of life and join together to nurture and deepen their spiritual lives through Christian community.

We live in faith by:

-- Ray W. Mendenhall
     Minister

Our Purpose

To know the Lord Jesus Christ and to make Him known to others through loving care in worship, fellowship, stewardship, ministry and service.

Our Session

Our lay leadership consists of nine elders, called the session. Normally elders serve three year terms and may be elected for a maximum of six consecutive years. Each elder is part of a committee composed of lay members and elders that make recommendations to the session for action and attention.  Items for the attention of the Session should be addressed to the Clerk of Session, care of the church.

Our History

In June of 1879, Burgaw Presbyterian Church began to meet in the Academy Building in Burgaw with thirteen members. In 1880, a Sabbath school was started serving 20 children from the church and community.

Worship, spiritual growth and mission has been a part of the church's ministry from the beginning. Foreign missions in particular was an early interest and still is today.

Among the many notable ministers of the church is one P. L. Clark who served the church for 31 years from 1913-1949. The Reverend Mr. Clark had a great influence not only on the church but on the surrounding community. He conducted many services and established several churches and chapels in the county during his ministry.

Worship, Nurture, Outreach to the community and Mission are still focal points of the church's ministry today. We enter the 21st century seeking to fulfill our purpose statement.
